- Your resume is your first impression. Make sure when it lands on the hiring manager's desk it stands out from all the other.
- Very important to include a cover letter. It gives the potential employer insight about you the person. A resume is never just enough!
- The end result of your search is a better job. You primary goal is to get enough interviews to find the best job for you.
- Pursue your passions. If you don't absolutely love your work a lifetime is a long time to be unhappy. Do what you love most and the money will come.
- Always tell the truth. You say well everyone else stretches the truth to look good. You be the exception and you will never regret it. Honestly is a rare commodity but worth it in the end.
- Try to imagine what questions you are going to be asked and be prepared to answer them.
- Always do your homework prior to an interview so that you understand the employers overall business.
- Maintain solid eye contact in an interview. It communicates both confidence in your ability and interest in learning about the opportunity.
- Ask good questions but talk 20% of the time and listen 80%.Never discuss financial issues in a first interview unless the employer brings it up first. There is time for that later on.
- Don't assume anything. If you must know if interview expenses are going to be reimbursed ask upfront.
- Always be early for your interviews. Allow time to find the office etc. Otherwise what could happen usually does and you have only yourself to blame for being late.
- Come to an interview prepared to leave references. You know you will need it so why not come prepared.
- Never let your guard down. Until you get the job every phone call and email is part of the hiring process. Be on your best at all times.
- After an interview follow up with a "Thank You" in an email, letter or phone call.
- It's always better to overdress for an interview vs. under dress. Ask what the dress code is in advance and then you will know you are matching the company culture.
- Never put all your eggs in one basket. Work with recruiters, follow up on job boards, and ask friends for referrals. Find a job is a full time job.
- Use technology to your benefit. Perhaps you bring a power point that shows samples of some of your projects. Video resumes are gaining in popularity. Stand out!
- Mirror and match your interviewer. if he or she is leaning back in his/her chair and acting very relaxed in the interview you do not want to be intense. If the interview is all business what the body language and try to adjust to to the tone of the interview.
- Modesty is the best policy. What your language and send positive signals by how you speak and what you wear.
- Don't rush the job search process. Be strategic in your plan and allow enough time to find not just a job but the best job.
